Spiritual work is the hardest work I’ve ever encountered or undertaken. It’s often hidden in plain sight, within the workspaces we visit daily.

Consider typical work, like careers, yard work, or gym activities. If we use a metaphor, everyday work is like apple picking. You might shake the tree, climb it, or use a pole to dislodge apples from branches. In contrast, spiritual work happens inside us, or following the metaphor, it’s like the processes happening underground.

Spiritual work involves the soil, the seed, and the care we give to our future harvest. This combination manifests in what we see outwardly — our traditional efforts, or the fruit.

Sowing and reaping are different, and it’s possible to work on one aspect and neglect the other. For instance, we may plant the seed while someone else harvests it, or we may pick fruit that grew on land someone else diligently sowed.

Another perspective: many are employed by corporations asking us to sow seeds and harvest…
