In my youth, my dream was set in stone like an ancient obelisk. I yearned to be a basketball star, and the Orlando Magic was my passion. I wore their jerseys with pride, memorized every player’s name, and admired the prowess of stars like Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal. My days were filled with school, basketball, fishing, and more basketball. I loved nothing more than feeling the rhythm of the ball in my hands and the wind in my face as I sank shots from beyond the arc.

One evening, after a long day of fishing, I paused to shoot some hoops in the driveway. As the sun began to set, my mother called me in for dinner. She stood just inside the garage door, waiting for me. “Just a few more shots,” I pleaded. She relented, and I sank five shots in a row before rolling the ball inside.

As I washed my hands at the kitchen sink, my mother uttered words that would forever change me. “You know, Nicholas, not many people make it to the NBA. It’s better if we focus on our grades.” I was…
